The US Senate Commerce Committee is considering the Identity Theft Protection Act with bipartisan support. The bill would require companies that collect sensitive data on individuals to protect that data and to notify customers if a breach exposes personal details. Consumers would be able to freeze their credit reports after a breach to prevent third parties from opening accounts in their name. Failure to notify customers of breaches would result in fines up to $11,000 per customer. Susanna Montezemolo, policy analyst for the Consumers Union, calls the bill a good first step, but says the union will not support it until amendments are added to make it stronger. Other identity theft bills considered by congressional committees have not gained wide support, but the Identity Teft Protection Act has the support of both parties and comes from the committee with oversight and the Federal Trade Commission.
