I have a directory that I have configured using DFS to replicate to another site. The replication works fine and synchronizes with the other site without problems.

The problem I am having is that occasionally when a user opens a file and save it the file gets renamed to a set of random characters with no extension. For example the file "2005 Budget.xls" get renamed to "67ah73i9". It has the correct data in it if you open it manually and the time stamp changes to when the user saved the file. The really strange part is that on the other server for the DFS, the changes are present in the file but the file name is correct as "2005 Budget.xls". This has happened to numerous files (so far all of them are Excel spreadsheets) but it only occurs for a couple of users. I have an Excel spreadsheet that I open and save many times in a day and the problem never affects me.

Has anyone seen or experienced this problem? I am not even sure if it is DFS related or something else entirely. There are no DFS errors in event viewer.

Here is the fix for this problem.

KB Article 823230 fixes a number of FRS related problems, the sporadic renaming of Excel spreadsheet files hosted on DFS shares is one of the problems that is fixed by this hotfix.

In order to get this hotfix you must call MS for it as it is a pre-release fix.
