Data Types are used on the Amiga to describe types of files (images, sounds, text, hypertext and so on), allowing the Amiga and its applications to understand and use such files. Thus the actual 'Data Type' serves as a translator for the OS and application using the file. This type of modular approach allows developers to avoid having to build translators for every possible type of file directly into their own applications - if a Data Type is present, and the application can use it, the Data Type holds the key.
