Scammers and other cybercriminals are already exploiting Hurricane Katrina to take advantage of people's charity. The SANS Institute reports a number of e-mails pointing users to spoof websites, such as katrinahelp.com, katrinarelief.com, and katrinacleanup.com, that claim to take charitable donations through PayPal for the relief efforts. However, SANS has been unable to confirm where the money goes. A number of Katrina-related domain names are for sale on eBay. The Federal Bureau of Investigation is collecting information and working with service providers to shut down scam sites. eBay has shut down one auction for the domain name OurTsunami2005.com, which started bidding at $15,000 and claimed it would give half the proceeds to the Red Cross; however, the offerer had no connection with the Red Cross and had not signed up with eBay's program for collecting charitable donations. Sophos reports one e-mail attack that directs users to a website claiming to have the latest news on the hurricane, but infects visitors with a virus.
