Symantec reports that hackers are adapting to stronger security measures. Symantec found an average of 10,352 bots per day for the first six months of 2005. This is a jump from the 5,000 bots per day counted at the end of 2004. However, this jump follows a plummet from 30,000 active bots per day in June 2004 following Microsoft's release of Windows XP Service Pack 2. While the service pack may have significantly cut bot activity, the recent increase suggests malicious coders are adapting their malwares. Denial of service (DoS) attacks, typically launched from botnets, rose 680% by June 2005. Hackers offer botnet services for use in DoS attack for extortion.
