A Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) spokesman announced November 16, 2004 that lawsuits have been filed against individual online video file-swappers for violating copyright laws. The MPAA warned earlier in November 2004 that it would move against individual offenders. The spokesman declined to give the number of lawsuits filed, but earlier estimates were reportedly in the hundreds. Individuals face fines of up to $30,000 per film if found guilty, according to the MPAA, who estimates that copyright violations cost it $3.5 billion annually.
