The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) has filed lawsuits against another 761 anonymous file traders. While college students often make up most of those sued, only 25 of the latest lawsuits involve people on college campuses. RIAA president Cary Sherman calls the lawsuits "an essential education tool" for reminding students about copyright law and pushing them toward legal download services, such as Apple's iTunes. While the lawsuits have made the public aware of the legal consequences of sharing music files, their impact on file sharing is questionable; earlier studies indicate a drop in file sharing, while more recent studies indicate constant or growing use. The latest round of lawsuits brings the total number of people sued since September 2003 up to 6,952.
