Massachusetts announced an initiative December 6, 2004 that will give
doctors in Massachusetts access to patients’ records from any hospital
in the state. The eHealth project, which has received $50 million in
funding from insurance company Blue Cross Blue Shield, will begin as a
pilot program in three communities and its organizers hope it will go
statewide within five years. Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney said the
switch from paper records could save millions of dollars and improve the
quality of patients’ care. Project leader Micky Tripathi said medicine
is slow to embrace information technology due to a lack of financial
incentives, and that Massachusetts could become the first state to have
a statewide electronic medial record system.
