Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates says passwords have become a security risk, due to the ease of stealing or cracking them, and announced in November 2004 a program to outfit employees with smart cards for access to the internal networks. Many companies are moving to centralized servers to handle authorization for network access, but these identity management systems rely on passwords to prevent unauthorized users from gaining access. Passwords are generally very easy for programs to guess, and can generally be broken within minutes. Even difficult to determine passwords can be easily stolen by spyware, leading security experts to recommend two-factor authentication, where a password is accompanied by some sort of smart card or biometric identifier.
