Fingerprint sensors on devices from cell phones to PCs and printers were displayed at the 2005 Consumer Electronics Show in January 2005, advertised as convenience-based security. Gary Bradt, VP of the biometrics division at Silex Technology, said his company’s product was inspired by HIPAA and Sarbanes-Oxley Act requirements, and that shared printer access and competition between coworkers drives the demand for printer privacy and security. His company is marketing its SecurePoint technology to human resources, banking, government, legal, and financial companies, where confidentiality and security are important. AuthenTec, which demonstrated biometrically enabled PCs, cell phones and peripherals, said that biometric technology can provide users with security without hassle, and can be used over networks to add security without encumbering workflow.
