The US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) plans to test RFID (radio frequency identification) tags as part of its US-VISIT (United States Visitor and Immigrant Status Indicator Technology) system. Starting spring 2005, DHS will test RFID at a "simulated port" and then extend the technology to entry points in Nogales East and Nogales West in Arizona, Alexandria Bay in New York, and Pacific Highway and Peace Arch in Washington by the end of July. RFID would be used to track both pedestrians and vehicles as they enter and exit the United States; how the RFID will be used with travelers in not yet known. Testing will continue through the spring of 2006.
