ChoicePoint has notified an additional 110,000 people that their personal details may have been compromised in a recent cyberattack; already, 750 cases of identity theft have reportedly resulted from the breach. When ChoicePoint originally reported the incident in compliance with California law, it notified 35,000 Californians that their personal data -- including names, addresses, Social Security numbers, and credit reports -- may have been stolen. The attackers managed to steal the data by setting up fifty fraudulent business accounts, some posing as collection agencies running background checks. The scammers used previously stolen identities to obtain business licenses, phone numbers, and addresses for their fake companies. ChoicePoint learned of the attack in the fall of 2004, but law enforcement forbade the company from disclosing it to the public in order to protect an ongoing investigation. One California man has already pled no contest to felony charges related to the incident.
