Recent security incidents, such as the exposure of data by ChoicePoint, the hacking of Paris Hilton’s T-Mobile Sidekick, and the loss of tapes holding over one million federal employee’s financial information by Bank of America, are motivating lawmakers to reconsider federal laws that dictate corporate responsibility for sensitive information. A growing number of primarily Democratic senators are calling for new laws. Senator Arlen Spector has pledged to convene hearings in the Judiciary committee. Senator Dianne Feinstein said the Bank of America incident highlights the necessity for the Senate to address the protection of individuals’ personal data. Advocates of increased regulation, such as executive director of the Electronic Privacy Information Center (EPIC) Mark Rotenburg, hope the highly publicized security breaches will give the issue increased political potency and spur legislative bodies to action.
