Health firm Kaiser Permanente has notified 140 patients that a disgruntled employee posted their personal details online in her blog. However, the employee --identified only as "Elisa" -- claims Kaiser posted the data online through an unsecured website and she only pointed it out. Kaiser spokesman Matthew Schiffgens says the company is unable to verify Elisa's claims, but noted that her blog posts would still constitute a breach of her responsibility to protect patients' privacy. Elisa says the information has been available online for over a year and that she has filed a complaint with Health and Human Services' Office of Civil Rights. Mr. Schiffgens confirmed that the Office of Civil Rights informed Kaiser of the breach in January 2005. The information includes medical record numbers, patient names, and information about lab tests but not results.
