California's Chico State University will send notification to 59,000 students, faculty, and staff that their personal details may have been compromised during a network breach university officials describe as the largest hacking incident they have ever seen. The majority of those affected are students, as the information consisted mostly of names and Social Security numbers of former, current, and prospective students. The university discovered the break-in after routine network monitoring revealed that someone had installed software on the University Housing and Food Service server to store files and attack other computers. University police are investigating the incident, but Joe Wills, director of public affairs, doubts the the hackers will be caught, since the attack may have originated off-campus and may not have involved university personnel.
