U.S. lawmakers said March 17, 2005 that they may draft new restrictions on companies that collect social security numbers and other sensitive information in order to fight identity fraud. Though executives from ChoicePoint and LexisNexis told lawmakers that they have scaled back the sale of sensitive information following their information break-ins, lawmakers in a U.S. House of Representatives Energy and Commerce Committee said data brokers should not be allowed to sell Social Security numbers without an individual’s permission. Committee chairman Joe Barton said there is a very good chance a bill would be put together. Representative Ed Markey, who has already introduced a bill on the subject, said the industry still does not recognize the value Americans’ place on their privacy and are hoping to ride out the scandal.
