In a ruling undermining online anonymity, the chief executive of Collins Stewart Tullett won damages from Jeremy Benjamin, a fund manager who posted false allegations on the Motley Fool chat forum under the name analyzer71. The British High Court said the postings described serious allegations of criminal and dishonest financial wrongdoing by chief executive Terry Smith. The undisclosed damages are said to be substantial, but pale in comparison to the legal cost of Mr. Smith and his firm, which Mr. Benjamin will be forced to pay. The Motley Fool was compelled by a court order to identify Mr. Benjamin, and the IP address associated with the postings were traced back to a computer at his workplace. The Motley Fool issued a statement pointing out that their terms and conditions of use remind users of their legal responsibilities.
