British Prime Minister Tony Blair will reintroduce the controversial National Identity Cards Bill to Parliament in the Queen's Speech on May 17, 2005, but may have to make concessions on the bill given the Labour Party's reduced majority in the House of Commons. Concessions may include increasing the Information Commissioner's oversight of the national identity card system and tighter controls on who may access information kept in the national identity register. While this may appease Labour MPs who voted against the plan, the cost will likely remain an important issue for the Liberal Democrats, who made opposition to the bill a key campaign platform. The Home Office estimates that that the identity card plan would cost £5.5 billion ($10.2 billion) over 10 years.
