As demonstrated by recent breaches at Wachovia and Bank of America, stealing sensitive data can be a low-tech crime facilitated by inadequate safeguards. Evan Hendricks, publisher of the Privacy Times newsletter, says organizations still view security and privacy as an afterthought. Inexpensive measures such as encryption could have prevented large-scale thefts by unauthorized employees, as well as protected information on lost tapes and computers. Tighter screening and monitoring of employees would also prevent some breaches, and the cost of such measures pales in comparison with the potential costs of privacy incidents.
