Electronic Frontiers Australia (EFA) is urging the the Australian federal government to review its telecommunications interception laws in order to increase privacy protections for e-mail, SMS, and other electronic communications. December 2004, Australia passed an amendment that would allow investigators to access stored communications if given a warrant by a justice of the peace without informing the owner. EFA says the law makes it unclear whether federal agencies could issue their own notices to access data. The government has appointed an independent reviewer to address such questions, but the appointment was not made until March, making it doubtful that a new law could be passed before the amendment expires on December 15, 2005. The EFA has proposed a new type of warrant to be issued by judges and requiring the Attorney General to report how many such warrants are issued and how useful they have been.
