Police investigators now estimate that the number of bank accounts illegally accessed by a New Jersey cyber-crime group at 676,000, up from 500,000. Hackensack police detective Frank Lomia announced May 20, 2005 that investigators have uncovered evidence that an additional 176,000 accounts were accessed. Police followed the cyber-crime ring for four months, leading to charges against nine people, including seven former employees of four banks, for involvement in what the US Department of the Treasury calls the largest breach of banking security in US history. The group compiled a database of accounts with names and Social Security numbers, and allegedly sold the information to more than 40 collection agencies and law firms.
