Do you remember?
... when 640K of RAM actually was all you needed?
... when a 2400bps modem was fast?
... when a 21MB hard drive was considered huge?
... when 640x480 in 16 colors was something to look forward to?
... when an 8MHz CPU was an upgrade?
... when "wireless" meant you were transferring between computers using floppies instead of a serial cable?
... when an entire year's worth of essays fit on to a 720KB, 3.5" floppy disk?
... 360KB, 5 1/4" floppy disks?
... the entire operating system - and all of its tools - fit into 5MB?
I personally miss the olden days. In 1993, I had a 486DX2 - running at 66MHz, with 4MB of RAM, a 340MB hard drive, a 14.4kbps modem, and a VGA card (640x480x16). It ran Windows 3.1 on top of DOS 6.2. What a system I had!
Sometime in 1996, I upgraded from Windows 3.1 to Windows NT 4.0, and really started to get going! At some point, I had a disk added for an additional few gigabytes worth of space - figures we had never seen before. I miss that computer a lot.
In 1997, things got complicated. I ended up getting a Pentium 133 with 64MB of RAM, and 4GB drive at the time. It sported slightly better graphics (all the way up to 1024x768). It ran Windows NT 4.0.
Do I enjoy current technology? Yes. However, I miss the technology of yesterday just a bit more. Sometime between 1998 and today, technology became less fun and more hassle. I'll gladly trade in Windows XP for NT 4 - if only I could find a system to run it on... |
