As Microsoft already posted not long ago, the most wanted Longhorn will not be based on the .Net Framework. What does this mean for us?
Considering the fact that the .Net Framework will be the core for a small subset of Longhorn, specifically the WAP (Windows API Platform), which consists primarily of the "Avalon" Windows presentation system and the "Indigo" Windows communications system, somehow we could rest assured that we will be facing it.
It has been stated, also on several technical related forums that the .Net Framework 2.0 beta could potentially break applications. Could this be the reason for not incorporate .NET into the core? Until we get the official version from Redmond, let's hope for the best!
Meanwhile, what do I do as a system administrator to get a feeling of Longhorn? I am installing the Transformation Pack – available for download by MSDN subscribers. What doe sit do to my system? It modifies icons and provides me with a Longhorn feeling. Is it necessary? No. Does it feel good to beta test new stuff? Without discussions!
Until Longhorn becomes public for beat testing, keep reading and get ready! |
